New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Jan Kerouac. "Having survived- barely- her bewildering childhood and frantically hedonistic teenage years, as recounted in her earlier book, Baby Driver, Jan Kerouac continues the picaresque saga of her quest for identity. Returning from South America to her mother's home in Oregon, she pauses briefly for a restorative dose of family comforts, but her restless need to explore life to its limits soon propels her onward to new indulgences, new men, and further travels on the road of self-discovery." (from front flap) The second & last of two autobiographical novels by Jan Kerouac (1952-1996), the doomed daughter of Beat Generation Founding Father Jack Kerouac & his second wife, Joan Haverty Kerouac. Jan had her own rather riveting style, but also inherited her father's powers of observation & evocation on the page, as well as an uncanny physical resemblance. This writer saw & heard Jan in person reading from her works at the legendary Beat Conference at NYU during 1994, an unforgettable & haunting experience. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition as stated on copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon. On the title page, above title & her printed name, Jan Kerouac has hand-written her signature in blue ink. As the keen-eyed collector will note, even Jan's signature somewhat resembles that of her father. A primary rarity, along with & complimentary to our signed first edition of Baby Driver (Item No. 4177), by the tragic offspring of the tragic hero of the Beat Generation. Book in very fine condition with only two tiny gauges at lower edges of front & back cover boards near corners; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with only a few miniscule bumps & very short, faint creases at thin edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; one tiny spot at blank area of front flap near lower edge. Clear protective jacket has been affixed to blank lower inner spine by previous owner/ seller & therefore cannot be removed without risk of slight damage. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4192]
