Nicholasville, KY: Wind Publications, 2011. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Signed by Thomas Rain Crowe. "When moon becomes/ the mask of the sun/ And rocks shed their skin/ like snakes/ When trees/ join in circles and dance/ And water runs uphill/ to turn into fire/ How will we sing to the land?/ What hidden mercy will have/ boarded up our past in dreams?/ Seeds buried by soil/ Faces covered by the fingers of negligence/ Our ancient names" ("Masks," pg. 49) A collection of poems by Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). With many black-&-white reproductions of photographs by writer-photographer Simone Lipscomb throughout. Both Crowe & Lipscomb are native North Carolinians, & her hauntingly tranquil (tranquilly haunting?) images of nature & roughhewn structures in the rural areas of their beloved state perfectly complement his poems, the words & pictures are both rooted in the land they depict. With color reproductions of Lipscomb photos on front & back covers; laudatory quotes on back cover including by Gary Snyder, among the most important original Beat Generation mentor-colleagues of Crowe & Co. Trade-format softcover, first edition as stated on copyright page, published simultaneously with a hardcover edition. On the title page, below & just barely overlapping with his printed name, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. A most desirable & rewarding Crowe collectible, greatly enhanced by Lipscomb's images. In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing & faint scratching to glossy front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps & creases at thin edges & corners of same; a few light, miniscule spots at upper & lower edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4195]
