A Clown in a Grave: The Complexities and Tensions in the Works of Gregory Corso

Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois University Press, 1999. First Edition. Hardcover. Michael Skau, Professor Emeritus at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (his place of work since the Fall of 1973) has written book-length academic studies (another book-length work, on Ferlinghetti, is titled "Constantly Risking Absurdity: The Writings of Lawrence Ferlinghetti" was published in 1989) as well as numerous articles on other Beat Generation writers. These articles survey sections of the life and work of William S. Burroughs, Richard Brautigan, Jack Kerouac and others. A little-known fact about Skau is he really is part of that very first generation of Beat Scholarship--his Master's Thesis at the University of Illinois was titled "Themes and Movements in the Literature of the Beat Generation." He was hired shortly after graduating with a Master's by University of Nebraska, Omaha but took a sabbatical-of sorts during Summer, 1975 to be among the freewheeling first graduating class of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute. Knowing what we know of Corso's antics that summer of 1975, maybe the "Clown" part of the title is Skau's book-length treatment of Corso is a wink-&-a-nod to those heady misadventures. What is known, though, is this: Skau is an excellent scholar, present from the naissance of Beat Scholarship (along with John Tytell) and is too often overlooked by Beat literary scholars and mid-century American literary scholars more broadly. Perhaps the interested, crate digging scholar will come along and argue with and/or advance the perspectives and observations Skau offers forth--we look forward to seeing what can be harvested when such a scholar comes along. Book in as new condition, still in shrink-wrap. As New. [Item #4202]
