New York, NY: E.P. Dutton and Company, Inc., 1976. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." (Chapter 1, first sentence, pg. 3) Thus famously begins the novel about the manners & foibles of England's landed gentry during the late 18th-early 19th century by Jane Austen (1775-1817), first published in 1813. Evermore popular with each generation, this & Austen's five other classic works have been republished in myriad editions, parodied, filmed & analyzed ad infinitum. Here is a very stately, handsome first edition thus of Austen's tale, of its own time & place yet timeless in its depiction of human nature: Hardcover in slipcase, published by the venerable E.P. Dutton & Co. in 1976, with exquisite illustrations by the acclaimed American artist Isabel Bishop (1902-1988). With a biographical note on & afterword by Bishop. The illustrations & afterword are copyrighted 1976, & it is noted on copyright page that this copy was printed in the USA, with a different publisher's edition published simultaneously in Canada. We note that there is a very small impression of a maple leaf (the symbol of Canada) on lower back cover spine-edge, & that we have seen a reference to Bishop having executed these illustrations during the 1940s (the originals are now held at the Morgan Library in NYC). It is therefore possible that this is a Canadian printing despite the above publisher's statement, & that this edition is a reissue of an earlier version, though there is no mention of a previous edition or limitation on copyright page, & there is no colophon. In any case, this is a beautiful, collectible & presentable production of Austin's immortal work. Book in very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing & a few tiny spots to front, back covers & spine; very slight rubbing & scratching to golden-color-dyed upper edge of text block; very slight inward curvature of binding at upper spine-edge. Interior very fine, substantially mint. Slipcase fine with reproduction of one of Bishop's illustrations on front board & inside-attached ribbon for book removal; mild wear with slight loss of brown surface at open edges & corners; several very small, thin scratches with surface loss at left-middle area of back board. Very Fine / (Slipcase) Fine. [Item #4211]
