Some Time: A Selection, 1945-1987

New York, NY: DIA Art Foundation, 1987. Limited First Printing. Softcover. (1/500 Unnumbered Copies). Robert Creeley’s “Some Time: A Selection, 1945-1987” was “…published on the occasion of a reading of these poems by the poet, November 12, 1987, DIA Art Foundation, New York, New York. The reading and a moderated discussion with the poet following the reading were videotaped.” This slim selection of Creeley culls the some of the finest scallops of verse from the deep of his expansive oeuvre and places them alongside more contemporary verses favored by the poet and likely showcased at the November 12, 1987 reading referred to above. It contains, among many other works, two of this writer’s favorite Creeley specimens: his poem on Hart Crane (titled, appropriately, “Hart Crane) and the title poem of his landmark debut collection, “For Love.” This is a great collection for the Creeley-curious; the uninitiated reader who has doubtlessly heard of him by way of his association with other mid-century literary titans, but has yet to survey his verse for themselves. Happily for some, it is not flush with the metaphysical rhyming quatrains of his twilight years (“metaphysical” as in “influenced by the Metaphysical Poets of 17th Century England). For this reason—in the humble opinion of this writer— “Some Time” effortlessly enjoys a major advantage over later “Selected” and “Collected” publications which bear Bob’s name and verse. [ISBN: 0-944521-04-5]. Book in very fine condition with only slight, barely visible scattered spotting to front cover; the aforementioned spotting appears on back cover, as well, albeit gathered more visibly in the bottom right-hand corner of back cover; tiny spotting in the manner described also present at text block; slightest shelf-wear to fine-edges.
