An Outcast of the Islands

Avon, Connecticut: The Limited Editions Club/ The Cardavon Press, 1975. Limited First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Signed by Illustrator Robert Shore. "It was with (An Outcast of the Islands) that Conrad decided his life, which was to be congruent with his art. He doubted, after Almayer's Folly (1895), whether he "should write another line for print." He might have gone back to sea and dreamed away his life in doubt and self-accusation. But, he tells us, his friend Edward Garnett asked him, "Why not write another?" And so he wrote another, this other, and at the age of thirty-eight pronounced his own life-sentence, that of a writer." (from Introduction by Clifton Fadiman, pg. vi) The second novel by Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), the canonical Polish-British author of this & other immortal works including Heart of Darkness & Lord Jim. An exemplary Conrad tale in which the protagonist embarks on a voyage of discovery- & self-discovery. Originally published in 1896, offered here is the Limited Editions Club first edition thus published in 1975. A large, beautiful production, hardcover with illustrated boards & spine in slipcase.
