A Ken of Kipling

New York, NY: New Amsterdam Book Company, 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. Subtitled "Being a Biographical Sketch of Rudyard Kipling, With an Appreciation and Some Anecdotes" with an exemplary late-Victorian flourish, this interesting volume about the great British author Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was written by Will M. Clemens, a possible distant relative (or at least apparently an acquaintance) of Samuel Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain. With seven chapters devoted to various aspects of Kipling's life & work, including one entitled "Kipling and Mark Twain" about the first meeting of the two canonical literary figures, & a list of Kipling's books through this period. Seven years before this production, Clemens published the earliest book-length biography of his (friend? relative?) Twain. Hardcover with illustrated front cover depicting a Kiplingesque elephant motif. With three illustrations including elegant frontispiece photogravure portrait of Kipling protected by attached rice-paper. First edition of 1899, presumed first printing. We are not certain if there was a dust jacket issued, if so it is not present here. A charming vintage Kipling-related collectible with a Twain twist, so to speak. In relatively good-to-near-fine condition with moderate-to-significant rubbing to front, back covers & esp. spine (where lettering is hardly visible); moderate wear & a few small areas of fraying at edges & corners of same esp. spine-edges; moderate rubbing to edges of text block. Interior near-fine with mild browning to blank margins of page leaves, side & lower edges of same uncut as issued; very quaint vintage bookplate affixed to inner front cover/ front pastedown. Good- Near Fine. [Item #4224]
