Philadelphia, PA: Henry Altemus, n/d (Circa 1895). First Edition Thus (?). Hardcover. A volume of stories by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the great British poet, novelist & story-writer whose prolific output celebrated the colonial British Empire. Current censure (if not outright censoring & "cancelling") of imperialism & native cultural appropriation (which he indeed upheld & practiced) aside, the quality & adventuresome excitement of Kipling's evocative writings bestow on them a time-tested, immortal place in the world literary canon. Originally published in England during 1888, this & all of Kipling's many works have been republished in myriad editions, combined, abridged etc. Here is a charming American production, undated but approximately from around 1895 or thereabouts, a likely first edition thus. Small-format hardcover with beautiful decorative front cover floral illustration. A part of publisher's "Illustrated Vademecum Series" as listed along with other series at rear of volume (although interestingly there are no interior illustrations, only decorative touches preceding & following text). Loosely included as found between inner back cover-pastedown & endpaper is a vintage newspaper article clipping entitled "Cars Cause Appendicitis. Trolley Brings the Disease Because People Fail to Exercise." Byline below title states: "Morristown (N.J.) Cor. New York Tribune." No date, appx. contemporary with this book. We have not seen references to this particular edition & cannot determine if it was originally published with any dust jacket, if so it is not present. A lovely little Kipling relic with hilariously ironic antiquarian ephemera (the phenomenon of a sedentary society has somewhat increased, we would think). In relatively fine unrestored condition with only mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; light wear & rubbing to edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & browning to edges of text block incl. dyed upper edge with slight fading, some tiny chips. Interior fine with slight browning & occasional spotting mostly at blank margins of page leaves & front decorative paste-down, endpaper; somewhat pronounced browning where clipping has resided at rear paste-down, endpaper; previous later owner's pencil signature at blank upper margin of front endpaper. Ephemera extensively browned & brittle but quite intact. Fine. [Item #4239]
