Mark Twain: A Biography (Three Volumes)

New York, NY: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1912. First Edition. Hardcovers. The first full biography of Mark Twain (born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910), the canonical American author & humorist. Published only two years after his death, this monumental three-volume achievement by Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937) describes Twain's life & works in granular detail, in a strictly linear chronology beginning with his ancestors. As noted on title page, the volumes are enriched "With Letters, Comments and Incidental/ Writings Hitherto Unpublished; Also/ New episodes, Anecdotes etc." throughout. Each volume contains many illustrations of Twain; his family, friends & colleagues; & places associated with him. Each volume begins with a different, beautifully reproduced frontispiece portrait of Twain protected by rice paper with caption. Offered here is the first edition, first printing, first issue, with all points in McBride including copyright page date codes "H-M" in Vol. 1 & "I-M" in Vol.s II & III (pg. 453). Uniform red cloth covers & spines with gilt letters & decorations. We have seen no references to dust jackets, & presume that this handsome set was issued without them. Still regarded as an exhaustive & definitive biography of one of America's- & the world's- greatest literary icons, Paine went on to publish a children's & shorter biography of Twain, & edited volumes of Twain's letters & speeches. A superb, supremely collectible set in exceptionally very fine, unrestored condition: Books with only mild rubbing & fading to front, back covers & esp. spines; light wear at edges & corners of same esp. spine-edges & corners; mild rubbing & browning to side & lower edges of text blocks (both uncut as issued); moderate rubbing & fading to gilt, cut upper edges of same. Interiors all very fine with only light browning mostly at blank margins of page leaves, blank endpapers & paste-downs; sparse spotting to front endpaper of Vol. I. Very Fine. [Item #4251]
