Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 2019. First Edition. Hardcover. "When Allen Ginsberg went to South America in 1960, ostensibly to attend a literary conference, he had a different kind of trip in mind. This would be a journey deep into the realm of consciousness, the inward travel explored to exhilarating effect in his writing, whether in the poetry that had earned him international acclaim or in the idiosyncratic journals that raised self-documentation to a new art form. In South American Journals, Ginsberg describes his travels through Chile and Peru, his visit to Machu Picchu, and his search for ayahuasca, or yage, a mind-expanding drug recommended by his friend William S. Burroughs, another writer well traveled in altered states of consciousness." (from front flap) A volume of journal entries by Allen Ginsberg, Founding Father of the Beat Generation, written at a critical time & place in his life & work. Most importantly in our estimation, these journals are a deep compliment to & expansion of the classic collaborative work between WSB & Ginsberg, The Yage Letters (that is, The Yage Letters Redux as restored & annotated by Oliver Harris). The latter work's emphasis is WSB's misadventures & observations as he quests for & finally imbibes ayahuasca in South America during 1953. Here, some years later, Ginsberg takes over & adds his inimitable stamp to this quest & its consequences. Among the writings are prose & poems heretofore unpublished; & also including several facsimile journal pages & photographs. Edited & with an introduction by Michael Schumacher, the acclaimed Ginsberg Biographer & scholar. This is the second of three volumes of Ginsberg journals, preceded by Iron Curtain Journals January - May 1965 (2018, see Item No. 3495) & followed by The Fall of America Journals 1965 - 1971 (2020, soon to appear on TMB), all edited by Schumacher & published by University of Minnesota Press. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page, a beautiful production in green cloth covers & spine with sewn binding. A Ginsberg collectible that is destined for increasing rarity, & of utmost interest to Third Minds. Book in very fine condition, as new with only a few small, faint smudges at upper edge of text block that are undoubtedly very slight flaws as issued; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Colorful, psychedelic dust jacket very fine, as new with only a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4255]
