(Part I, "1887," first stanza, pg. 3) The popular poem cycle by Alfred Edward Housman (1859-1936), the great British classical scholar & poet. Housman's evocations of the disappointed aspirations of youth in the English countryside contain a broader message on the human condition & society. Originally published in 1896, this cycle of poems even inspired composers to set its words to music. Offered here is a very handsome first edition thus, an exemplary production of The Folio Society. Hardcover with illustrated boards in slipcase, with beautiful reproductions of wood-engraved illustrations on covers & throughout by Agnes Miller Parker (1895-1980), the acclaimed Scottish-born artist, originally executed during 1940. As noted on copyright page, the "...text follows that of the authorized edition of 1924, published by Henry Holt and Company." A lovely & collectible version of the Housman classic. Book in very fine condition, substantially mint inside & out. Slipcase very fine with only some very faint scratches to front & rear panels; a bit of wear to open edges & corners.
