Views of a Nearsighted Cannoneer

London, England: Alan Ross, 1969. First UK Edition. Hardcover. "I write this in London, where I have found an English publisher willing to give me the equivalent of your airwaves for my American voice. This voice, this book in your hands, first made their appearance via a tiny Greenwich Village press in New York in 1961. The press is long dead; the voice is still swinging, although the tune she changeth. What you have before you was written in great sweat and urgency between 1957 and 1960, a breakthrough for me unlike anything I had experienced in the ball-and-chain literary days that prisoned me before I said fuck it all and poured out the pieces in this book. I hope that through them you can experience what I went through on the New York Scene." (from Preface, unpaginated) A volume of essays on "sex/ suicide/ homosexuality/ sportswriting/ Jews/ Negroes/ jazz/ making it/ genius/ masturbation/ insanity/ New York-/ the literary/ lower/ depths" (front flap) by Seymour Krim (1922-1989), editor of one of the earliest anthologies on the writings of the Beat Generation (The Beats, 1960). This is the first UK edition of the expanded version of "an underground landmark" first published in 1961, as Krim notes in the Preface exclusive to this edition quoted above. Preceded by the first new American edition the previous year (1968). Many of these essays first appeared in various periodicals, including Commonweal, Partisan Review and the Village Voice. With a Foreword by Norman Mailer, & laudatory comments by James Baldwin & William Styron on dust jacket back cover. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. A classic collection by a contemporary Beat-counterculture chronicler, in an especially rare form. Book in very fine condition with only very mild rubbing, faint scratching & a few tiny spots to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with very light, faint creases at/ near upper corners of some page leaves. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4282]
