Cullowhee, NC: Fern Hill Books/ New Native Press, 2015. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by publisher Thomas Rain Crowe. "Elegy Epitaphs of Appleton derives its inspiration from the weathered pioneer cemetery headstones which plotted the checkerboard hamlets surrounding Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1950. Written in the free verse style of Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology," the writer utilized actual recorded historical and apocryphal tales, which gushed forth as artesian freshets from the lyrical larynxes of the venerable corncob pipe, cracker barrel jokesmithers and folkliars." (from back cover) A collection of hauntedly humorous (humorously haunted?) poems by John Sauter, an American writer, English professor & football coach who was born & raised in Adams County, Pennsylvania, "...just a rifle shot from Gettysburg." (Author's Forward, pg. 3) Trade-format softcover original, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page. A production of Fern Hill Books, a subsidiary of New Native Press, the imprint of Thomas Rain Crowe- the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting From San Francisco, Item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). On the copyright page, below & next to reference to FHB & NNP, Crowe has hand-written his signature in bold blue ink. A disturbingly entertaining (entertainingly disturbing?) Sauter collectible with publisher's association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing & scratching to glossy front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; a touch of light rubbing at lower edge of text block just at side-corner. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #4293]
