Sons and Lovers

Avon, CT: The Limited Editions Club, 1975. Limited First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Signed by illustrator Sheila Robinson. A novel by D(avid) H(erbert) Lawrence (1885-1930), the great British poet & writer. First published in 1913, this early work in the Lawrence oeuvre was at the cutting edge, indeed way ahead of its time with its deep, relatively explicit treatment of the sexual, emotional & psychological issues of its protagonists. The initial responses of puzzlement by established literary & cultural arbiters, & their inevitable accusations of obscenity, have long given way to universal recognition of this, his two previous novels & the many that would follow as immortal classics along with the many poems & stories from Lawrence's prolific pen. Offered here is the Limited Editions Club first edition thus published in 1975. A large, magnificent production, hardcover bound in coarse cloth in slipcase. With an introduction by Robert Gorham Davis (1908-1998), the venerable American literary critic & academician; & with reproductions of twelve full-page color & sixteen partial-page black-&-white illustrations by Sheila Robinson (1925-1988), the acclaimed British artist. One of 2000 copies hand-numbered & signed by Robinson at colophon, this is copy No. 1771/2000. Also loosely present in this copy are a single-sheet prospectus for this edition (printed on recto only), & publisher's monthly newsletter of November, 1975 (No. 493) devoted to an essay on this volume & its contributors. A beautiful & highly collectible version of this important component of the Lawrence canon. Book in very fine condition, all but mint inside & out with only small, almost undiscernibly faint vertical creases at blank areas near side-edges of some page leaves. Prospectus & newsletter very fine with only a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners. Publisher's notoriously fragile glassine protective jacket relatively quite fine with only moderate browning, creasing to surfaces; tiny bumps, creases and some mostly closed, short tears at edges & corners. We have provided our own clear protective jacket over same. Slipcase very fine with only a few short scratches at bottom panel close to rear panel; one tiny, non-penetrating dimple-bump at edge between top & front panels. Very Fine / (Slipcase) Very Fine.
