Revolutionary Letters

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 1971. Second Enlarged Edition, First Edition Thus. Softcover. "TO BE FREE we've got to be free of/ any idea of freedom./ Today the State Dept lifted the ban on/ travel to China; and closed/ Merritt College." ("Revolutionary Letter #47," pg. 59) The canonical collection of poems by Diane di Prima (1934-2020), primary poet of the Beat Generation & beyond. Published as No. 27 in the iconic Pocket Poets Series of City Lights Books, this copy is from the "Second Edition, Enlarged" (back cover) of October 1971, issued only seven months following the first edition of March 1971 & with six additional poems (Revolutionary Letters 44-49, incl. No. 47 quoted above). As with the preceding first edition & the two following editions (each with yet more Revolutionary Letters), 3000 copies were printed, with no reprints of any of the four editions according to CLB's records. See Cook, No. 89 (a-d, esp. b), pgs. 94-95. Also (we believe as with all the editions), the Revolutionary letters are preceded by the poem "April Fool Birthday Poem for Grandpa" & followed by six other poems & a poem cycle ('Free City' poems). With front cover lettering-artwork by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the great poet, publisher & bookseller who led CLB for seven decades; & back cover photograph of di Prima by James Mitchell. An outstanding di Prima/CLB/PPS collectible, in one of its four individually rare versions. In relatively near-fine condition with mild rubbing, scratching, creasing & spotting to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; light rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves; stamp of previous owner on blank area of title page. Near Fine. [Item #4300]
