With the Night Mail: A Story of 2000 A.D.

New York, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1909. First American Edition. Hardcover. A speculative, fantastical science-fiction story by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the great British writer most known for his works of fabulist fiction that concern the British Empire & its then-colony (Raj) of India. Here we believe that Kipling was inspired, or competing with, his contemporary H.G. Wells (1866-1946), who with his futuristic novels such as War of the Worlds, The Time Machine etc. left much more of a stamp on world literature & culture. Hardcover with illustrated front cover & spine, first American edition published in March 1909 as noted on copyright page, which states "Reprinted in book form by permission of/ the S.S. McClure Company." We have seen reference to a British volume in which this story was one of several contributions published later the same year, & we believe the reprinting notice quoted above refers to its serialization in a magazine during a previous year (the story is copyrighted 1905 & 2009). We conclude that this is therefore the first-ever exclusive publication of With the Night Mail as a book. No dust jacket present, we have not seen reference to any & so this was likely issued without one. A very interesting production, with text on recto of page leaves only, & color reproductions of illustrations by Frank X. Levendecker & H. Reuterdahl on pastedowns, frontispiece & interior. Following the story are four supplemental chapters or appendices: "Aerial Board of Control Bulletin," "Correspondence," "Reviews" & "Advertising Section" which augment & continue the conceit of the story, especially the latter section with fake ads for flying-related products imagined in a then-distant future. A delightful & unusual Kipling collectible; an exemplary relic of early 20th century futuristic speculation. In relatively good-to-near-fine unrestored condition with moderate rubbing, spot-staining & scratching to front, back covers & spine (gilt lettering & illustrations mostly quite intact); moderate wear with very slight loss of cloth to edges & corners of same; several small vertical, hardly penetrating gauge-scratches at upper left surface of blank back cover; moderate browning & rubbing to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior also good-to-near-fine with loosening of side hinge-edges between inner covers & paste-downs (but binding & all leaves intact & attached); protective ricepaper between frontispiece & title page has been removed; four leaves (pgs. 50 esp., 68, "Miscellaneous" & "Air Planes and Dirigible Goods" ad pages) with tape-repaired closed tears; several other ad pages with mostly short, closed unrepaired tears at blank side-margins & edges. Good- Near Fine. [Item #4308]
