Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus

New York, NY: The Limited Editions Club, 1934. Limited First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Signed by illustrator Everett Henry. The great Gothic novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) first published in 1818. Considered in critical hindsight as one of the earliest works of science fiction, Shelley's masterpiece is also a keen allegorical study of human nature & hubris. Offered here is the Limited Editions Club first edition thus published in 1934. A lovely production, hardcover bound in stripe-decorated cloth with leather & gilt spine. With an introduction by Edmund Lester Pearson (1880-1937), a pioneering author of the true crime literary genre; & with color reproductions of full-page illustrations & tableaus by Everett Henry (1893-1961), the acclaimed American artist. One of 1500 copies hand-numbered & signed by Henry at colophon, this is copy No. 824/1500. Original slipcase (which we believe to have been of plain cardboard) or publisher's glassine protective jacket (if any) not present, nor any prospectus, newsletter or other ephemera which may have been included for members-subscribers of the Club (as we have seen in its later editions). We have, as always, provided our own clear protective jacket. A very handsome & collectible version of the canonical classic, published only three years after the film version with Boris Karloff's iconic appearance as Dr. Frankenstein's creation. In fine condition with only very slight scratching to leather at spine (with no substantive loss of gilt); slight wear to edges & corners of same; a bit of wear to corners of cloth cover boards; very slight rubbing & scratching to upper gilt edge of text block, side & lower edges of same uncut as issued. Interior fine with (very quaint, vintage) previous owner's bookplate affixed to blank front paste-down; inner thin hinge-edges between front & rear paste-downs & endpapers loosening with closed tears, creases (but binding quite intact with no loosening of any leaves); small, faint creases & tiny bumps at upper corners of some page leaves; small area of creasing at thin upper (gilt) edge of one leaf (pgs. 75-76). Fine. [Item #4324]
