ISBN: 0146001184
n/p; New York, NY: Pacific Red Car; Penguin Books, 1991; 1995. First Editions Thus. Chapbook; Softcover. Two collectible editions of the classic cycle of poems by Jack Kerouac, Founding Father of the Beat Generation: (1) San Francisco Blues, chapbook in stapled wrappers published by Pacific Red Car in 1991 per back cover. The lack of a copyright page, place, ISBN number etc. indicate that this is likely an unauthorized bootleg edition, though it is a handsome & well-made production. Preceding the 79 numbered choruses which comprise the work is this statement from publisher: "Jack Kerouac typed up the complete text for SAN FRANCISCO BLUES in 1961, there were 79 choruses in all. Those choruses were never published together until 1983. Before that fragments had appeared in small magazines and some only materialized on records. Fifty four of the choruses were never published at all! Kerouac would have loved for the entire work to be published as a 'beautiful unity' as he saw it. To fill the gap in the Kerouac shelf, SFB is here published in its entirety. Hopefully it will give a reminder of his sense of fun and way with words. Some of these choruses have appeared in TUVOTI, NEW DIRECTIONS, HEAVEN & OTHER POEMS, ARK and PALANTIR." With a page of nine "Notes on the Text" following choruses. (2) San Francisco Blues, small-format softcover original first edition thus published by Penguin Books in 1995, a part of publisher's "Penguin 60s" series on the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary per back cover. As noted thereon, "Jack Kerouac is best known for his multi-volume Legend of Duluoz, which includes On the Road and The Dharma Bums, but he was also an important poet. One of the eight extended poems contained in Kerouac's Book of Blues (Penguin 1995), "San Francisco Blues" is an exuberant foray into language and consciousness, combining rich imagery, complex internal rhythms, and a reverent attentiveness to the moment." This edition contains eighty numbered choruses, & is structured differently than (1) above. Two different, rare editions of the enchanting & elusive Kerouac poetry milestone. (1) in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing & scratching to glossy front, back covers & stapled spine; a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very light rubbing & sparse spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. (2) relatively near-fine with mild-to-moderate rubbing, scratching & faint creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; moderate browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior near-fine with previous owner's ink signature just below upper edge of blank inner front cover; significant browning & spotting to blank inner covers & endpapers; milder browning & sparser spotting mostly to blank margins of page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of a few of same.
