Extracts From Adam's Diary
New York, NY: Harper & Brothers, 1906. First Edition, Second Printing. Hardcover. A satirical work, daring & irreverent for its time, by Samuel Langhorne Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain (1835-1910), the canonical American humorist & author. With frontispiece illustration of Adam "writing his diary" surrounded by Eve & the creatures of Eden, & hieroglyphic-spoofing illustrations opposite each page of text, all by F. Strothman. Hardcover in red cloth with color illustration of detail from frontispiece on front cover. Originally published completely & separately by this publisher in 1904, this printing is dated 1906 (in roman numerals on title page) & is almost certainly the second printing, identical to the first printing per images we have seen. We have not encountered references to or images of any dust jacket issued with this edition, if it ever existed it is not present here. See McBride, pgs. 214-215. A later Twain classic in its penultimately rarest original form. In fair-to-good, unrestored condition with moderate rubbing, fading & occasional tiny spots to front, back covers & esp. spine; mild-to-moderate wear at edges & corners of same; very short, closed tears & minor fraying at all corners & esp. spine-edges; moderate rubbing, browning & scratching to edges of text block incl. significant fading to dyed upper edge of same.
