London, England: Bloomsbury Publishing, 1998. First Edition, Uncorrected Proof Copy. Softcover. "Puerto Rico was a backwater and the Daily News was staffed mainly by ill-tempered wandering rabble. They moved erratically, on the winds of rumor and opportunity, all over Europe, Latin America and the Far East- wherever there were English-language newspapers, jumping from one to another, looking always for the big break, the crucial assignment, the rich heiress or the fat job at the far end of the next plane ticket...Like most of the others, I was a seeker, a mover, a malcontent, and at times a stupid hell-raiser. I was never idle long enough to do much thinking, but I felt somehow that my instincts were right...At the same time, I shared a dark suspicion that the life we were leading was a lost cause, that we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles- a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other- that kept me going." (from introductory chapter, "San Juan, Winter 1958," pgs. 4-5) The early novel by Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005), the Great Gonzo Journalist whose life & work was like a comet whose deep & wide impact on American letters & culture still resonates. Closely based on Thompson's own experiences as a very young itinerant reporter in Puerto Rico during the late 1950s, this fictionalized memoir was begun in 1959 but not published until 1998. It was also the basis of the memorable film of the same title starring Johnny Depp (2011). Offered here is the first UK edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page, Uncorrected Proof Copy preceding publication date of October 1998 as noted on back cover & this statement of publisher thereon: "This is an uncorrected proof copy and is not for sale.
