But Even So

New York, NY: New Directions Publishing Corporation, 1968. First Softcover Edition, Third Printing. Softcover. The second collection of "Picture Poems" by Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972), the brilliant American poet, artist & pacifist who was an inspiring influence on the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance & is still revered with a devoted following today. Preceded the previous year (1967) with Hallelujah Anyway (see item No. 4387), which described these unique works of art & literature on back cover: "As a creative form, the Patchen picture-poem is descended from the "illuminated printing" of William Blake. Blake devised an etching process for his pages of hand-lettered poems; but Patchen works more freely, with watercolor, casein, inks, and other media, as he blends word and image in intricate but always visually compelling patterns of shape, color, and meaning." With popular momentum having built up by the publication of this second volume, the back cover states that this is "The book that needs no blurb," & that there are "44 all-new Picture Poems by Kenneth Patchen" herein. Trade-format first softcover edition in sewn binding, first issued the same year (probably simultaneously in 1968) as a hardcover edition, third printing as stated on copyright page. A production of James Laughlin's New Directions "Paperbook" imprint, the brave beacon of literary & artistic freedom (in parallel with Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City Lights Pocket Poets Series), a champion of Patchen & many other groundbreaking figures. While not a first printing, the lack of an ISBN number, sewn binding & general condition (below) of this copy indicate that it was likely produced within the decade of the 1960s, probably 1968 or 1969 as this is an early printing of this instantly popular collection. A classic Patchen collectible that exemplifies his most special gift & style at its peak. In relatively fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only moderate browning & spotting at very thin margins & edges of page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of some of same. Fine. [Item #4408]
