London, England: Chatto & Windus, 1899. First British Edition Thus, Early Printing. Hardcover. The famously large cornucopia of humorous writings compiled & with contributions by Samuel Langhorne Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain, the canonical American humorist & author. Originally published in an American edition by Charles L. Webster & Co. during 1887, & "anonymously" edited by William Dean Howells, the esteemed American author who was Twain's close friend & colleague, according to scholars & bibliographers. With anecdotes, poems, stories & excerpts by Twain himself (all previously published) & many other notable writers including Ambrose Bierce, Joel Chandler Harris & Howells. Johnson, pgs. 62-63; McBride, pg. 122. Offered here is an 1899 printing of the first British edition thus originally published by Chatto & Windus the year after the first American edition described above (1888). McBride, pg. 123. Hardcover in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on front cover, gilt decorations & lettering on spine. With many illustrations by E.W. Kemble as in the American edition, including frontispiece captioned "You spotted-backed, striped-legged, p'inted-hatted sun-of-a-gun!" protected by semitransparent onionskin sheet still attached between same & title page; & an extensive alphabetical catalog of publisher's many books (including this) following texts. We have seen no image or reference to a dust jacket for this edition, if any existed it is not present here. A delightful & collectible Twain-related treasury of classic American humor. In relatively near-fine unrestored condition with mild rubbing, scratching & sparse spotting to front, back covers & spine (with hardly any dulling or loss of gilt); mild-to-moderate wear to edges & corners of same incl. several very short, closed tears at spine-edges & corners; moderate rubbing, browning, scratching & spotting to edges of text block. Interior near-fine with moderate browning & spotting to blank paste-downs; more significant to endpapers; very light browning & occasional spotting mostly to blank margins of page leaves; more significant browning to publisher's catalog (the leaves of which appear to be made of a different, lesser-quality paper stock); small-to-tiny bumps, creases at corners of some page leaves. We note that the final three leaves of publisher's catalog are still uncut & attached at side-edge, & the preceding two leaves are uncut & attached at lower edge- we have left it that way & recommend purchaser leave them be as well.
