The Age of Innocence

New York, NY: Random House/ The Modern Library, n/d (Circa 1950). First Edition Thus, Early Printing. Hardcover. "By the test of time alone, Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence has more than justified the enthusiastic adjectives applied to it when it was first published more than twenty years ago. Then it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, and ever since has been winning new favor in the eyes of judges of enduring American fiction. This story of New York before it became of age captures the spirit of the metropolis and preserves for us the social history of an era, in the decade of the 1870's, when elegance and gallantry were on display on gas-lit Fifth Avenue." (front flap) The classic novel of manners & intrigues among the wealthiest strata of early Gilded Age New York City by the canonical American novelist Edith Wharton (1862-1937). First published in 1920, this copy is from the Modern Library edition, smaller-format hardcover in clipped dust jacket, undated first edition thus, an early (possibly first) printing of appx. 1950 or thereabouts. The lack of a zip code in coupon on back cover of dust jacket, reference to the novel having first been published "more than twenty years ago" in above quote, & the general aesthetics of the volume & dust jacket lead us to this conclusion. A collectible version of Wharton's beloved novel which was the basis for Martin Scorsese's award-winning 1993 film; an exemplary Modern Library production. Book in very fine condition with only slight wear to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; mild rubbing & browning to side & lower edges of text block; mild fading & spotting to black-dyed upper edge of same. Interior very fine with only a touch of light browning to blank margins of page leaves; small crease at upper corner of one leaf (pgs. 11-12). Unrestored dust jacket in relatively good condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; more pronounced & incl. several short, mostly closed tears with very slight loss of paper at spine-edges & corners, slightly onto front cover; inner (printed) surfaces with mild spotting & browning. Very Fine / good. [Item #4424]
