New York, NY: Simon & Schuster, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. "In the past few years, no one has influenced the sound and style of hard-rock music in America as greatly as Jim Morrison, lead singer, composer and lyricist for The Doors. The savage, superheated intimacy of his performance, the turned-on intensity of his music, and his uninhibited personality and public pronouncements have made an indelible impression on high school and college kids all over the world. The Lords and The New Creatures is Jim Morrison's first published book of poetry, and it resounds with the driving rhythm, the sharp contrasts, and the often brutal honesty that identify the singular "Morrison" sound." (from front flap) The only anthology of poetry issued by a commercial publisher during the lifetime of James Douglas "Jim" Morrison (1943-1971), the legendary musician. Nearly to the very day of the fiftieth anniversary of Morrison's somewhat mysterious death (July 3, 1971) in Paris at the age of 27 (as with Hendrix, Joplin, Winehouse et al.), we present this highly collectible literary & cultural production: Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page. As noted thereon, this edition was preceded the previous year (1969) with privately printed editions of 100 copies each of the two collections gathered here in one volume. The poems herein, untitled & some haiku-like in their brevity, are truly evocative & spine-tingling indeed- & the reader can detect the influence of Morrison's friend Michael McClure, & therefore of the sensibilities of the Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance. The music & poetry of Jim Morrison has stood the test of time, long-beyond the sphere of "high school and college kids." A magnificent Morrison rarity in exceptionally very fine, quite close to mint condition: Book with only a bit of wear & fading to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; a few tiny spots at side edge of text block; very slight fading, spotting & scratching to purple-dyed upper edge of same. Interior very fine, substantially mint. Dust jacket very fine with only the slightest rubbing & scratching to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of same; sparse spotting esp. at/ near spine of blank inner jacket with no visibility at outer surface. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4461]
