Cass Timberlane: A Novel of Husbands and Wives

New York, NY: Random House, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. "This, the nineteenth novel by Sinclair Lewis, is the intense story of a marriage. It is a romance of our time, written with unsparing realism and satire, yet with tenderness and maturity of understanding. Here are passion and struggle between a man and a woman bound together by the torments of jealousy and the quiet of their unity." A later work by Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), the canonical & very prolific American novelist, short story writer, poet & playwright. While perhaps not quite on the level of his most popular novels of the 1920s-1930s such as Arrowsmith, Babbit, Elmer Gantry & Main Street, Cass Timberlane is nevertheless exemplary of Lewis' style with depth, insight & empathy, & has stood the test of time within his oeuvre. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page. As also stated thereon, "THIS IS A WARTIME BOOK" in which "...every effort has been made to comply with/ the Government's request to conserve essential materials." Below this statement, imposed over publisher's familiar logo is a World War II-vintage "V" for Victory. Dust jacket background colors are black above with subtitle & author, blue below with title & continuing on spine. These colors indicate a first issue jacket, preceding or simulatneous with green & red (both with black) that we have seen. A classic Lewis novel in its most collectible original form; & a very interesting relic of American productions during the Second World War. Book in fine condition with mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine esp. at/ near edges & corners; slight wear & moderate rubbing at edges & corners of same; tiny bumps at upper outer cover corners; moderate rubbing, browning, scratching & occasional spotting to edges of text block; slight fading to black-dyed upper edge of same. Interior fine with moderate-to-significant browning of paste-downs & endpapers (undoubtedly due to wartime conservation material); undated but obviously contemporary signature & address of former owner in old-time cursive black ink at upper area of blank front endpaper; very slight browning mostly to blank margins of page leaves; slightly shortened, rough-cutted lower (& more occasionally side) edges of a few of same (again, a wartime-quality point). Unrestored dust jacket relatively good with moderate rubbing, scratching & faint creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild-to-significant wear at edges & corners of same incl. short, closed tears & small areas of missing paper esp. at upper spine-edges, corners & upper right corner of front cover; original price ($2.75) crossed-out with handwritten price ($1.49) next to & above it in light-blue ink over pencil. Fine / good. [Item #4463]
