Black Butterfly

n/p (Winston-Salem, NC): Palaemon Press LImited, 1982. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Barry Hannah. A short story by Barry Hannah (1942-2010), the acclaimed American writer & academician who resided & worked in Mississippi, & largely focused on the Southern region in the great gothic-grotesque tradition of William Faulkner (who also lived in Oxford, MS where Hannah taught), Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams et al. A beautiful hand-crafted letterpress production in marbled boards with leather spine by the late venerable Palaemon Press. Per colophon, one of 150 copies printed. Not noted on colophon, but on the website of Duke University Library (https://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/collections/palaemon), is that of these 150 copies 100 were numbered & signed by Hannah, 26 were lettered & signed for private distribution (both of the above in wrappers), & 10 were produced in the manner of this copy & numbered I-X "for the use of the publisher." This is copy VII/X (7/10) as hand-numbered at colophon. On title page, below & very slightly overlapping with printed name of publisher, Hannah has hand-written his signature in black ink. As to the remaining 14 copies, we presume they were author's copies &/or hors commerce. An extremely rare & desirable Hannah collectible. In very fine condition with only a tiny touch of wear at lower outer corners of cover boards; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #4464]
