Europe and Elsewhere

New York, NY: Harper & Brothers, 1923. First Edition. Hardcover. A posthumous collection of miscellaneous writings by Samuel Langhorne Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain, the canonical American humorist & author. With many theretofore unpublished writings from Twain's long & most-prolific career, as noted in the Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937), Twain's close friend & writer of his first comprehensive three-volume biography (1912, see our item No. 4251). Also with many articles gathered for the first time in one volume from myriad now-obscure periodicals. Hardcover in green cloth with black lettering & graphics on spine, first edition of 1923, second printing as indicated by "L-X" on copyright page. With frontispiece reproduction of captioned illustration signed by Peter Newell depicting Twain greeting Satan & regarding the story "Sold to Satan" (pg. 326), & an Appreciation of Twain's life & work by the respected author & academician Brander Matthews (1852-1929) in addition to Paine's introductory essay mentioned above. See McBride, pg. 253, where there is an image of a dust jacket (not present here) & which indicates red cloth on its copy of the second printing- therefore we conclude that this edition was published simultaneously in green, red & perhaps other alternate-colored versions. An important & rather scarce early Twain anthology, in its penultimately rarest version. In relatively near-fine unrestored condition with light rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, loss of color in small areas & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; thin, faint horizontal blisters across surface of front cover; several small spot-stains at back cover; mild rubbing, browning & scratching to edges of text block; several small-to-medium spot-stains at side & esp. upper edges of same. Interior fine with mild browning mostly to blank margins of page leaves incl. blank paste-downs & endpapers; tiny bumps at edges & corners of a few page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #4466]
