Collected Poems: 1947-1980 (UK Edition)

Harmondsworth, England: Viking Press, 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. "Gathered here for the first time is the work of an American poet whose distinction is unquestioned today, although it began in controversy. 'Collected Poems' includes all the writings contained in the six volumes published by City Lights Books, many rare pamphlets issued by small presses, and a number of unpublished texts--for instance, 'Many Loves,' an erotic rhapsody dating from the historic 'San Francisco Renaissance' era, which has to date been withheld 'for reasons of prudence and modesty.' ... Arranged chronologically, this first collection includes illustrations by Ginsberg's friends; unusual and illuminating notes to the poems, written by the author himself; extensive indexes; and prefaces and other material that accompanied the original publication." (from Front Flap). Well, if you know anything about Allen Ginsberg you may have chuckled at the notion of Allen ever moderating his speech or behavior "...for reasons of prudence and modesty." Otherwise, the flap is correct--this is a massive and important collection, a great choice if you are trying to get all of your Ginsberg in a kosher casserole of Pure Poetry. Offered here is the rarer-than-average UK Hardcover Edition of Ginsberg's collected poems. A funny story about this collection is that Ginsberg kind of pissed off the late, great Lawrence Ferlinghetti by going with "a big-time publisher" and not allowing Lawrence to bring forth Allen's 'Collected' after a lifetime of putting his ass on the line for Allen in virtually every way (excepting doing so literally, of course). Allen's decision may have been for the best, because this is a handsome, well-produced edition deserving of Allen's contribution to Poetry. Book in very fine and clearly unread condition, with only minor smudges to bottom of text block and minute scuffing to top left-hand corner of front cover which continues ever so slightly horizontally over at the spine, yet remains a supremely clean example of the much scarcer UK Hardcover Edition of this supreme collection of Ginsberg. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4467]
