Typed Letter Signed

Sussex, England: Rudyard Kipling, 1925. Typed Letter Signed. Single Sheet. Typed & Signed by Rudyard Kipling. An original short letter (appx. 7&3/4" x 5"), hand-typed & signed by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the canonical British author & journalist. Dated "21st February 1925," written on stationary on which is printed "(telegraph pole symbol) Burwash/ (railroad train symbol) Etchingham" near upper left corner/edge, "Bateman's/ Burwash/ Sussex" near upper right corner/edge. The typed text is addressed to "Alexander N. Smith Esq." & reads in its entirety: "Dear Sir,/ Many thanks for sending me the cutting from/ the New York Times Magazine. I much appreciate your/ kindness in sending me, from time to time, articles/ that appear in American newspapers and magazines./ Yours sincerely,/ (signed) Rudyard Kipling." Along with the letter we acquired a small slip of paper with a short biography containing highlights of Kipling's works & career, presumably by a previous seller. We note that "(1865- )" is typed on the note stating the year of Kipling's birth while he was still alive, therefore indicating that it was written some time between the date of Kipling's note & January 18, 1936- the day of Kipling's death. A warm, casual dispatch from the iconic Rudyard Kipling at the height of his success & venerability, which demonstrates the connection in his life & works with both Britain & America. Letter in relatively near-fine unrestored condition with mild rubbing, spotting & faint creasing to surfaces (verso is blank); very slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners; one thin vertical crease across surface where once folded; four small, oval-ish areas of brown residue in almost entirely blank areas near lower edge esp. on recto (slightly effecting only "Esq."). Ephemera slip also near fine with the same brown residue stains noted above at/near upper edge of surfaces (verso is blank), indicating this was most probably previously attached to lower section of letter; very slight, faint creasing at surfaces. Near Fine. [Item #4471]
