Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone

New York, NY: Random House, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. "Richard Farina's tragically short odyssey began in Brooklyn in 1937. Its places included Cornell University, Paris, Northern Ireland, Havana--once while Castro's army was entering the city--cities and countries across America and Europe. Its roles included poet, composer, IRA Revolutionary, singer, dulcimer-player, novelist--always developing and refining his own unique insights into our world and himself. Son of an Irish mother and a Cuban father, his travels seemed a journey to touch the world and then realize it in his own writing. At eighteen he fought with the Irish Republican Army, then on to Cuba and then to college. He left Cornell to live in Europe, and, in Paris, began his widely-acclaimed novel 'Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me,' some four hours--as Farina described it--'after I finished work as a blind harmonica player.' In France he met Mimi Baez, and in 1963 they were married and returned to California. Performing together they helped revitalize the California Folk Scene, and the memory of Richard and Mimi triumphantly singing despite a dismal summer downpour at the Newport Folk Festival has become almost a mythic moment of these summer concerts...'Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone' brings together the best of Richard Farina's shorter writings, stories, poems, essays and song lyrics, many of which have never been published. Not only do they show Farina's mature talent as a writer, they also serve as a sort of autobiography providing a unique glimpse into his life and dreams." (from Front and Back Flap). While that excellent promotional copy on the flaps virtually says all that needs to be said about why you should buy this book, take a second and go on YouTube, copy-pasting the following URL there: https://youtu.be/vU2miApn-Ww. Now, after viewing that, you know more than ever that you should buy this book. Farina is a lost treasure, a Musician's Musician and a Writer's Writer. Join the club! Book in very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear to topmost fine-edges and a few scattered instances of spotting on FFEP near rightmost fine-edge, but otherwise predominantly immaculate. Dust-jacket in especially very fine condition--quite simply the best instance We at Third Mind Books have ever seen, eclipsing even the copy in our Founding Curator's Personal Collection--with only slightest shelf-wear to fine-edges; the tiniest closed tear near spine at top-leftmost fine-edge of front cover near spine; slight rubbing along rightmost fine-edge of same; slight discoloration to topmost fine-edge of same as if the black cover of the actual book bled its color ever so slightly into it. Despite the aforementioned magnifying-glass descriptions, the true state of the back cover is exemplified by the spotless, gorgeous photo of Richard and Mimi at the Newport Folk Festival in a silly, joyous embrace. This is a true First Edition, First Printing with introduction by Joan Baez, a gem of a copy. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4475]
