Masters of Deceit: The Story of Communism in America and How to Fight It

New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company, 1958. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed & signed by J. Edgar Hoover. "The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation explains the startling facts about the major menace of our time, communism: what it is, how it works, what its aims are, the real dangers it poses, and what loyal American citizens must know to protect their freedom." (from front flap) The famous, impassioned Clarion Call against Communism by J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972), the legendary first & longest Director of the FBI, who to this day is as much controversial as he is venerated. Published in the wake of Senator Joseph McCarthy's disgrace & death, but still within the height of the Cold War & virulent anti-communism, this volume is an especially exemplary relic of its time in American & world history. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, "Fourth Printing, June, 1958" as stated on copyright page. The previous three printings are noted thereon, & the first printing was issued during March of 1958, only several months earlier. On blank front endpaper, Hoover has hand-written, signed & dated in bold blue ink: "To/ (?).J. Faltz/ Best Wishes/ (signed) J. Edgar Hoover/ Xmas 1959." Interestingly, a gilt facsimile of Hoover's signature printed on the front cover is almost identical to the original & can be easily compared to it. A unique collectible from a classic-notorious figure of American history. Book in fine condition with very light rubbing & fading to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, fading & small areas with loss of red color at edges & corners of same esp. upper spine-edge, corners & upper cover corners with very slight loss of cloth; mild rubbing, browning, scratching & occasional spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only light browning to paste-downs & endpapers; tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of a few page leaves.
