At Play in the Fields of the Lord

New York, NY: Random House, Inc., 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. "The setting of this wild, beautiful and haunting novel is the Amazon jungle, at once majestic and malevolent; the principal characters are four fundamentalist missionaries and a soldier of fortune; and the plot concerns their fanatical conflict over the fate of a primitive and dangerous tribe of jungle Indians...With this new novel Mr. Matthiessen far exceeds his previous achievement. At Play in the Fields of the Lord is the work of a major American writer." (from front flap) The fourth novel by Peter Matthiessen (1927-2014), the prolific & award-winning American author, naturalist, explorer & Zen Master. Matthiessen led a most colorful, stranger-than-fiction life that included co-founding & briefly editing the Paris Review with George Plimpton & Co. as a cover while employed as a CIA agent. This novel is probably the most well-known among his fictional works, & was the basis for an acclaimed film version starring John Lithgow & Daryl Hannah, & featuring cult musician Tom Waits (1991). Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as stated on copyright page. An essential Matthiessen collectible in its rarest & quite scarce original form. Book in very fine condition with only a bit of wear to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; slight loss of gilt at spine (none at all to front cover gilt illustration-motif); a touch of rubbing, scratching to edges of text block (orange-dyed upper edge unfaded, side edge untrimmed as issued). Interior very fine with small encircled "H" stamped on front paste-down near upper edge/ right corner; otherwise substantially mint. Unrestored dust jacket relatively good-to-near-fine with mild rubbing, occasional spotting & faint creasing to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear & tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; more pronounced at upper margins of covers & spine; small-to-tiny areas with loss of paper at upper spine-edge, esp. lower right corner of front cover, at/ near upper edge of rear flap & upper left corner of back cover; one small, faint colored pencil or crayon curved line at upper margin of front cover very slightly overlapping with title letters (but not effecting any legibility); another encircled "H" in faded rectangle stamped at blank upper margin of front flap with slight loss of beige surface color ("10/65" printed near lower right corner of same indicates this is a first issue jacket).
