First, to honor Gordon with a fresh effort to keep his memory green and second, to make of this occasion a means of advancing the cause of conservation and stream improvement to which he devoted so much of his own lifetime." (from Introduction, pg. xi) A collection of writings in tribute to Theodore Gordon (1854-1915), the revered American fly-fisherman & conservationist, by members of by The Theodore Gordon Flyfishers, a society dedicated to Gordon's memory & methods. Published by the Flyfishers on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Gordon's death, edited & with introduction (quoted above) & contribution by Arnold Gingrich; & including such essays as the inaugural "American Trout Fishing" by Gordon himself (his only known theretofore unpublished piece according to Editors' Notes preceding it), "A Limestone Lullaby" by Joe Brooks, "On a Long Island Stream" by Gingrich, "The Lure of Opening Day" by Oscar Godbout, "The Limestoners of Pennsylvania" by Vincent Marinaro, "Crackerbarrel Discourses" by Theodore Rogowski & many more by dedicated fly-fishing Gordon acolytes. Hardcover with leather spine, edges & paper boards in slipcase, a beautiful letterpress production by the venerable Connecticut Printers, Incorporated. One of an edition of 1500 copies hand-numbered at colophon (located opposite shorter title page), this is copy No. 1/1500. Also, on illustrated front paste-down, is affixed the plate of the printer, reading: "From the Library/ of/ Connecticut/ Printers/ Incorporated/ Hartford, Connecticut/ Entered (hand-typed on broken line) April 1, 1965 / No. (blank broken line)." Therefore, this is not only the first copy but was formerly in the collection of the printer. Also with frontispiece portrait of Gordon; reproduction of etching by John Groth repeated on front & rear paste-downs & endpapers; two plates with exquisite depictions of fishing lures. A most attractive fishing-related collectible in its absolutely rarest, literally one-of-a-kind form. Book in almost very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing, fading & sunning to lighter-blue paper cover boards; very slight browning at small areas of text block edges (side & lower edges untrimmed as issued). Interior fine with thin line of browning at hinge-edge between front paste-down & endpaper; one short, closed tear at upper portion of same with exposure to binding; last four leaves (pgs. 243-246) uncut at side edge as issued. Slipcase fair-to-good with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to title label affixed to front panel; moderate rubbing, scratching, browning & fading to all panels & esp. at thin edges & corners of same; mostly closed tear across entire rear upper edge & outer corner with separation.
