My Left Foot

New York, NY: Simon and Schuster, Inc., 1955. First American Edition. Hardcover. "This is the autobiography of a remarkable Irish boy who wanted only to be ordinary. Christy Brown was the "strange one" in a family which had 22 children. The only controllable part of his body was his left foot, so it became his one means of communication. His personal story is an epic of cheerful courage, portraying on the one hand the charming everyday events of his Dublin family life, and on the other lifting the curtain that hangs around the lives of the physically handicapped and revealing their thoughts and emotions." (from front cover, flap) The autobiography of Christy Brown (1932-1981), the Irish author & artist whose cerebral palsy left him with the full use of only his left foot, which he trained to write & paint. Thanks to his supportive family & indomitable will, Brown accomplished more than many who have full control of all their faculties. This inspiring memoir was the basis for the acclaimed 1989 film version starring the great actor Daniel Day Lewis as Brown, a role that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first American edition preceded the previous year (1954) by the first UK edition, first printing as stated on copyright page. With two sections of photographs of Brown & Co. (including Burl Ives performing at a Dublin concert in aid of the Cerebral Palsy Association). An unsparing, but uplifting, rare & classic collectible. Book in near-fine condition with slight rubbing, light scratching & occasional small spot-stains to front, esp. back covers & spine; light wear, some tiny bumps & sparse spot-staining to edges & corners of same with miniscule loss of green paper to lower right corner of front cover board, upper left corner of back cover board; one vertical, faint crease-bump across length of spine (but with binding, lettering & background completely intact); moderate-to-medium browning, light rubbing & scratching to edges of text block; several small spot-(ink?)stains at side & lower edges of same at/ near lower corner; medium fading, browning of dyed upper edge of same. Interior near-fine with mild browning & spotting to blank paste-downs & endpapers; a contemporary scrap-sheet taped at upper edge to front endpaper with "Please remember to pass book/ promptly(underlined)- that is the first/ day of each month- to the/ next reader./ Thank You! Ha" followed by a list of months from July 1955- March 1956, initials & numerals ending with "To Ha (125)"; medium-to-significant browning mostly to blank margins of all page leaves (apparently common to this vintage production); small spot-(ink?)stains bled from those mentioned above onto blank lower corners of final 15-or-so leaves, very slightly onto second photo section, slightest at lower corner-edges of a few preceding leaves. Unrestored dust jacket relatively near-fine with mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to front, back covers, spine & flaps; light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; small areas of spot-(ink?)stains mentioned above mostly to lower corner-edges of back cover & flap; much less to lower corner-edges of front cover & flap.
