The Anatomy Lesson and Other Stories

New York, NY: The Viking Press, Inc., 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. "Unlike most first books of stories, this one exhibits the versatility and explosive force of a talent already mature. From the title story, which deals with the remarkable lecture an art class receives from its usually taciturn master, to "The Yellow Raft," an unforgettable sketch of a downed flyer, these are stories with a wide range of subject matter, each achieving a precise and stunning effect in its own distinctive manner." (from front flap) The first published work of Evan Shelby Connell Jr. (1924-2013), the beloved & prolific American author most famous for his two novels of the every-couple Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, which were the basis of the acclaimed 1990 film starring Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward. Several of the stories compiled here first appeared in prestigious collections among those of other award-winning authors. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition of 1957 with all first printing/ issue points including $3.50 price on upper right front flap, no references to subsequent printings on copyright page, list of "Other Spring Fiction from Viking" on rear flap. Of particular interest & significance to us is the landmark first appearance of Jack Kerouac's On the Road by the same publisher only some months after this similarly-produced volume (see our item No. 3337). A foundational Connell collectible. Book in fine condition with only very slight, sparse rubbing to back cover board; a bit of wear to edges & corners esp. cloth spine-edges & corners; very slight browning to side & lower edges of text block; mild spotting & moderate-to-significant fading to light red-dyed upper edge of same. Interior very fine with only very light browning to blank paste-downs, endpapers & mostly blank margins of page leaves. Dust jacket fine with mild rubbing, browning & occasional small spot-staining to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear, a few tiny bumps & some creases at edges & corners of same esp. upper spine-edges & corners; $3.50 price lightly crossed-out in pencil (still completely legible) near upper right corner of front flap.
