Stop-Time

New York, NY: The Viking Press, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. "Like the measured, punctuated musical silences its title alludes to, this book vibrates with meaning and emotion. Because Stop-time is a memoir of boyhood and adolescence, it deals with family conflict, friendship and love, the paralysis of terror, pride in new powers- all the commonplaces of reminiscence. But this is the story of a young life told with such freedom and skill, peopled by characters so rich, that it transcends conventional categories and makes an exhilarating claim for greatness." (from front flap) The autobiographical work of adolescent angst & discovery by Frank Conroy (1936-2005), the acclaimed American writer & Grammy-award winning Jazz musician. Nominated for the National Book Award, this stranger-than-fiction, all-too-real & perceptive memoir was lauded by Norman Mailer & William Styron, who are quoted on dust jacket back cover. Mailer wrote: "Stop-time is unique, an autobiography with the intimate unprotected candor of a novel...Conroy has that subtle sense of the proportion of things which one usually finds only in established writers just after the mellowing of their career." Hardcover in clipped dust jacket, first edition. A collectible, original version of an American literary classic.
