Resistance, Rebellion, and Death

New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1961. First American Edition. Hardcover. "In the last two years before his death (Albert) Camus himself selected the pieces that make up this volume because they represented the sum total of his life. The book stands as a record of the experiences that nourished all of Camus' great work- a record not only of those exterior events in which he was involved, but of his growing interior vision. In this sense it is a chronology of faith, from his early years in the Resistance to his declaration of the role of the writer in human affairs. Between the youthful letters he wrote to a German friend, and his stirring condemnation of the horror of capital punishment, one finds here his clearly defined, eloquent and impassioned statement of beliefs on every major issue of our day." (from front flap) A compilation of writings by Albert Camus 1913-1960), the canonical French author who was among the premier founders of the Existential philosophy, published the year following his sudden & untimely death. These pieces originally appeared separately in French during the 1940s-1950s, & were selected by Camus himself for this edition as noted above.
