William Burroughs, Claude Pelieu, Bob Kaufman (L'Herne No. 9)

Paris, France: Editions de l'Herne, 1967. First Edition. Softcover. An anthology of original, excerpted & miscellaneous writings by William S. Burroughs, Founder's Founder of the Beat Generation & Beyond, all translated into French by Claude Pelieu & Mary Beach, the late husband-wife team of artist-writers who were WSB's close friends & associates (as well as the stepfather, mother & in-laws respectively of Pamela Beach Plymell & her husband, the Legendary Literary Outlaw Charles Plymell, both also friends of & collaborators with WSB). Including excerpts from The Yage Letters, Nova Express & many more-or-less obscure pieces. Also here are sections devoted to the poems of the elusive Beat/ San Francisco Renaissance icon Bob Kaufman, again translated from English into French by Pelieu & Beach; & to the WSB-influenced writings of Pelieu himself, in their original French. With three sections of photographs of/ relating to each of the contributing authors. Large-format softcover original in sewn binding, first edition, first printing of 1967 as indicated on pg. 308. An exemplary French production, No. 1 ("Etats-Unis") in publisher's L'Ecriture des vivants series, edited & with an introduction (delightfully entitled "Les Cow-boys de l'Apocalypse") by Pierre Bernard. All text in French. Maynard & Miles, D11, pgs. 180-183; Shoaf, Section I, No. 14, pg. 33; Schottlaender, A18(A), pg. 10. This copy is from the collection of Brian Schottlaender, our good friend & the author of "Anything But Routine," the most complete & up-to-date WSB bibliography now in its fourth ever-expanding online edition. As above, we always consult Brian's Bible for all our WSB-related rarities. As Schottlaender's & the other bibliographies cited above indicate, a very small special numbered & lettered edition of this volume was published concurrently with this edition. A very rare, magnificent & coveted collectible- fully half of which is devoted to WSB. In fine condition with light rubbing, mild browning & occasional spotting to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; very slight rubbing, browning & sparse spotting to edges of text block.
