Berkeley & Los Angeles, CA: University of California Press, 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. "This delightful comedy, which has never appeared in print or on stage, is at last available to the wide audience Mark Twain always wished it to reach. Written in 1898 in Vienna, as Twain emerged from one of the deepest depressions of his life, Is He Dead? shows his superb gift for humor operating at its most energetic. A reflection of Twain's perennial fascination with the theater, the play is sure to become a treasured addition to his remarkable legacy." (from front flap) A later work of farce, satire & inimitable wit by Samuel Langhorne Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain, the canonical American humorist & author whose immortal works are among the earliest to have been enshrined in the Library of America series. Published here for the first time nearly a century after Twain's death, this theatrical work is edited with foreword & extensive notes by Shelley Fisher Fishkin, the great Twain scholar who edited the 29-volume Oxford Mark Twain series (many of which are available as part of Twain bundles on our site). Also with front cover & interior illustrations by Barry Moser, vintage photographs & images, facsimile manuscript pages. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. A handsome production, & a most interesting posthumous Twain collectible in its rarest original (albeit relatively recent) form. Book in very fine condition with only one very small area of excess black cloth at upper right corner of front cover; small area of blister-creases at/ near upper right corner of blank front dark grey paste-down (both points undoubtedly slight flaws as issued); otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with a bit of rubbing, faint scratching & a few spots to front, back covers & spine; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same & flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4606]
