New York, NY: Delacorte Press/ Seymour Lawrence, 1985. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. "Kurt Vonnegut takes you back one million years. To A.D. 1986- and the beginning of the human race." (front flap) The fifteenth published work & eleventh novel of Kurt Vonnegut (Jr., 1922-2007), the acclaimed, award-winning, prolific & still-popular American author- whose canon is enshrined in the Library of America series. In this disturbingly hilarious (hilariously disturbing?) novel that only he could have pulled off, Vonnegut opines on Darwinian evolution & the development of the human brain through a wacky, science-fictionesque epic narrative full of bizarre characters & creatures. It is noted on front flap that Vonnegut (held) a Master's Degree in anthropology & had visited the Galapagos Islands on a cruise. Hardcover in unclipped first issue dust jacket (with $16.95 price printed on front flap, "1085" on rear flap), "First trade edition" as stated on copyright page, published simultaneously with a signed limited edition as noted thereon. Thoughtful & as ever most rewarding, here is another classic mid-later career Vonnegut collectible, in its penultimately rarest original form. Book in fine condition with very light rubbing & a bit of browning to front, back covers & spine (with silver-gilt spine lettering & facsimile signature on front board fully bright & intact); very slight wear, fading & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; mild-to-moderate spotting, light browning & a few faint scratches to edges of text block (side edge of same untrimmed as issued). Interior very fine with only miniscule bleeding of spots noted above onto side edges of a few page leaves; tiny bumps at near-edges & corners of a few of same. Dust jacket relatively near-fine with mild rubbing & some faint scratches to front, back covers & spine; light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; a few very short, mostly closed tears at spine-edges, corners & upper edges with minimal loss of paper; one very small area at upper spine-edge, right corner & slightly onto upper edge of front cover with tape repair-reinforcement. Fine / Near Fine. [Item #4614]
