New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1972. First American Edition. Hardcover. "This is Albert Camus' first novel, written between 1936 and 1938, and now in 1972 published for the first time in English, following by less than a year its initial appearance in France. It is a work of his early twenties, a time when he was beginning to develop the philosophical and literary consciousness that eventually spoke so eloquently to the postwar generation. In many interesting ways A Happy Death foreshadows The Stranger. But its most striking difference- beyond its differences of plot and intention- is that here Camus reveals more of himself than in his later, more mythic fiction...It is the first of the "cahiers" that Camus left unpublished and whose publication will complete his literary oeuvre." (from front flap) The earliest, posthumously published novel by Albert Camus (1913-1960), the canonical French author who was among the premier founders & expounders in fiction & essays of the Existential philosophy. Hardcover in clipped first issue dust jacket (with "5/72" printed on rear flap), "First American Edition" as stated on copyright page, preceded the previous year (1971) by a French edition as noted thereon. The first number in publisher's "Cahiers Albert Camus" series. Translated from the French into English by Richard Howard, the acclaimed American writer & critic; & with an afterword by the noted scholar Jean Sarocchi. The volume concludes with a "Notes and Variants" section. A classic Camus collectible in its rarest original English-language form. Book in very fine condition with only slight rubbing to off-white cloth front, back covers & esp. spine (with gilt lettering on spine only slightly dulled & mostly intact, quite bright & intact on front cover); a bit of wear, mild rubbing, browning & spotting to edges & corners of same; very slight fading & a few tiny scratches to red-dyed upper edge of text block; sparse spotting at side edge of same (untrimmed as issued). Interior very fine with only a touch of browning & a few spots at blank paste-downs & endpapers; miniscule bleeding of text block spots noted above onto side edges of a few page leaves; small, faint creases & tiny bumps to upper corners of a few of same. Dust jacket fine with mild rubbing, scratching & faint creasing to front, esp. back covers & spine; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; light browning at thin, mostly blank margins of flaps; one thin vertical crease across surface of front flap near right edge (not substantially effecting legibility of text). Very Fine / Fine. [Item #4619]
