San Francisco, CA: City Lights Books, 2021. First Edition. Softcover. "In the autumn of 1964, Diane di Prima was a young poet living in New York when her dearest friend, dancer, choreographer, and Warhol factory member, Freddie Herko, leapt from the window of a Greenwich Village apartment to a sudden, tragic death at the age of 29. In her shock and grief, di Prima began a daily practice of writing to Freddie. The result is an eloquent ode to her friend, and to the constellation of writers, artists, and revolutionaries- such as LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), George Herms, Frank O'Hara, and a host of others- who made up their community." (from back cover) A never-before-published journal-memoir by Diane di Prima (1934-2020), primary poet of the Beat Generation & Beyond. The writings compiled here refer to people & events during the years of 1954-1965, with a few reminiscences of di Prima's childhood. As noted above, the impetus for this work, subtitled "A Celebration of the Seasons for Freddie" (title page), was di Prima's friendship with Freddie Herko, whose suicide in October of 1964 traumatized her. To paraphrase William S. Burroughs, the reader might approach this as di Prima's way of "writing her way out" of this grief, the "only choice" of a sensitive poet. Such was the lasting trauma that di Prima apparently could not bear to publish this during her lifetime. As further noted on back cover, "Lyrical, elegant, and nakedly honest, Spring and Autumn Annals is a moving tribute to a friendship, and to the extraordinary innovation and accomplishments of the period. Masterfully observed and passionately recorded, it offers a uniquely American portrait of the artist as a young woman in the heyday of bohemian New York City." With a foreword by Ammiel Alcalay, & two sections of vintage photographs that depict the people & relics of the memorialized period. Trade-format softcover original, first edition, a production of City Lights Books, the iconic imprint of Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021) which issued some of di Prima's classic earlier works (see for example our item No. 4300). A most meaningful & evocative di Prima collectible which has only now just appeared after decades of gestation. In as-new condition with only a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers, spine & lower corners of a few page leaves. As new. [Item #4636]
