Whole Earth Review No. 63 (Summer 1989)

Sausalito, CA: Point Foundation, 1989. First Printing. Glued Wrappers. This number of the alternative-countercultural magazine chiefly edited by Kevin Kelly features an untitled piece by William S. Burroughs, Founder's Founder of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, the Patron Saint-Demon of our very enterprise (pg. 54). Part of this issue's "Is the Body Obsolete?" forum within its "The Obsolete Body: Special Section" with contributions by Kathy Acker (who was highly influenced by WSB), self-described "feminist porn star" Nina Hartley, Audre Lorde & many more. As noted after the text by Guest Editor Richard Kadrey, WSB's piece is a transcription of a recording on a (John) Giorno Poetry Systems record, mis-titled "Better A New Demon Than An Old God." WSB's words here are sobering & lucid, but with elements of his humorous-macabre "Routines." Shoaf, Section III, No. 374, pg. 160; Schottlaender, C604, pg. 85 (where mis-titling above is noted along with the actual record title "Better an Old Demon Than a New God," & the title of WSB's piece therein, "Dinosaurs"). Besides the special body-related section, this issue has many other articles including a compilation of interviews with William Gibson, the American-Canadian author most credited with pioneering the "Cyberpunk" literary genre. With many illustrations & images throughout, "Unclassified" contemporary ads, etc. Magazine in glued wrappers, complete except for subscription cards which have been removed from perforation. From the collection of Brian Schottlaender, author of "Anything But Routine," the most complete & up-to-date WSB bibliography now in its fourth ever-expanding online edition. We always consult our good friend Brian's ABR for all our WSB-related rarities, as above. An exemplary issue in this most collectible series, of special interest to WSB devotees & with significantly relevant provenance. In near-fine condition with mild rubbing & mild-to-moderate creasing to front, back covers & spine esp. crease across middle length of back cover; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; mailing sticker of former owner (previous to Brian) affixed to & slightly loosened from back cover near upper edge; mild rubbing & browning to edges of text block. Interior fine with mild-to-moderate browning mostly to blank margins & edges of page leaves; mild vertical wave-creases at/ near upper edges of some of same; tiny bumps, creases at corners of same.
