In the Clearing

New York, NY: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Famously containing his poem “For John F. Kennedy His Inauguration,” offered here is the 1962 release from celebrated American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963), “In the Clearing.” To say Frost was “celebrated” during lifetime would be an understatement: the man received four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry, and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. Upon receiving the Congressional Gold Medal, the Office of the Clerk, U.S. House of Representatives, wrote that the award be given to him “…in recognition of his poetry, which has enriched the culture of the United States and the philosophy of the world.” Frost himself never graduated from college, but that didn’t stop him from accruing over 40 honorary degrees (yes, you read that right)—degrees from such prestigious institutions as Oxford, Princeton and Cambridge to be counted among them. This work—which was published on his 88th birthday, ten months before his death—was the last volume of verse Frost saw published during his lifetime. This book, though ripe with the rhyming stanzas of yesteryear, is perhaps not unlike one of the many forgotten apple varietals that once dotted the landscape of Frost’s native Massachusetts. Like a refreshing bite into one of the crisp apples of old New England, Frost’s late-period verse seems at once familiar and forgotten. As William Carlos Williams told the young Allen Ginsberg, “…in regard to similar derivative rhymed texts, ‘in this mode, perfection is basic.’” Hardcover in clipped dust-jacket, the first edition as stated by copyright page (with no mention of additional printings, of which there were several). Book in very fine condition with only minute shelf-wear to fine-edges; slight age-typical spotting to top of text block; slight-to-mild browning, spotting at rear-facing endpaper. Dust-jacket in near fine condition with moderate-to-pronounced rubbing, slight scattered chipping to front, back covers and spine; small, minor bumps to corners of same. Very Fine / Near Fine.
