A Tree of Night and Other Stories

New York, NY: Random House, Inc., 1949. First Edition. Hardcover. "Eight extraordinary stories by the author of Other Voices, Other Rooms, including the celebrated "Miriam" and "Shut a Final Door," both of which have won O. Henry awards. Mr. Capote's reputation was made by his short stories long before the success of his novel. This, the first collection to be published in book form, (also) includes "A Tree of Night," Children on Their Birthdays,"..."The Headless Hawk," "My Side of the Matter," "Jug of Silver" and Master Misery." " (from front flap) The second published work by Truman Capote (1924-1984), the legendary American writer & journalist who would go on to single-handedly create the "nonfiction novel" genre with his true-crime account In Cold Blood (1965). This collection appeared on the heels of his phenomenally successful (& then-controversial) first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948, see our item No. 4618), & contains eight of Capote's exquisitely written early short stories as listed above.
