Press Kit for Film Version of Naked Lunch

Beverly Hills, CA: Twentieth Century Fox, 1991. First Edition. Stapled Sheets; Photographs. "The time is 1953. The place is New York in the grip of winter. William Lee, former junkie and now pest exterminator extraordinaire, is doing his daily rounds, killing cockroaches for the citizens with his poison. Until, like the insects themselves, his wife Joan becomes hooked on poison powder, and Lee's grim little life starts to whirl out of control." (pg. 1) Thus begins the synopsis of the film version of Naked Lunch, the breakthrough novel by William S. Burroughs, Founder's Founder of the Beat Generation & Beyond, the Patron Saint-Demon of our very enterprise. Offered here is the official press kit/ promotional package for the 1991 film by the acclaimed director David Cronenberg starring Peter Weller as "Bill Lee" (stand-in for WSB) & Judy Davis as two "Joan" characters who stand in for Joan Vollmer Burroughs, WSB's ill-fated common-law wife. This was the first (& so far only) completed & released attempt to depict the ultimately undepictable novel, after several false starts since its first publication in 1959. This writer & all Burroughsians can confirm that the novel & film are entirely disparate experiences, never to be confused with each other- director Cronenberg's vision goes its own way & incorporates aspects of WSB's life & work outside the book. But this film adaptation is a noble effort which, though not a substitute for reading its source, succeeds as a production, was acclaimed by critics & audiences, & most importantly was given the blessing of WSB himself. Large folder opening into two pouches, one with these letter-sized documents: Short synopsis/ promotion (2 stapled pgs.); long synopsis & actors' biographies (42 stapled pages, quoted above); & list of all credits (8 stapled pgs.). The opposite pouch contains ten glossy sheets (8" x 10") with developed photographs (1-3 per sheet) & captions, two in color & eight black-&-white. The photographs depict scenes in the film, director Cronenberg at work & with his actors, & (our favorite) WSB seated, flanked by Cronenberg & Weller standing behind him. Shoaf, Section VI, No. 24, pg. 208; Schottlaender, F14(1), pg. 126. From the collection of Brian Schottlaender, author of "Anything But Routine," the most complete & up-to-date WSB bibliography now in its fourth ever-expanding online edition. We always consult our good friend Brian's ABR for all our WSB-related rarities, as just above. A fascinating & very rare WSB-related collectible with distinguished provenance. Documents & photographs (all printed on recto only) in very fine condition with only slight rusting & minimal attendant bleeding to staples; tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of some page leaves & sheets; browning at thin edges of a few leaves. Folder near-fine with mild rubbing, scratching, creasing & occasional spotting to surfaces; mild wear & some tiny bumps, mild-to-moderate creases at thin edges & corners; two tiny holes, scratches at blank upper-left area near top edge of front cover from removal of a single staple; very short, mostly closed tears at lower spine-edge & corner with minimal loss of paper. Very Fine / (Folder) Near Fine. [Item #4713]
