Hell's Angels Ephemera: An Original Raffle Flyer (1968) for "Dirty Dick's Chopper"

San Francisco, CA: n/p (Hell's Angels), 1968. First Printing. Single Sheet. "Hell's Angels/ Announce A/ Raffle for/ Dirty Dick's/ (copyright)/ Chopper/ (1959 H.D. motorcycle)/ Donation $1.00/ Drawing September 28th, 1968/ need not be present to win." So does this vintage broadside-flyer (appx. 5&1/3" x 8&1/3") beckon bidders to an auction for one of its members' motorcycles. Tickets could be obtained at "Pall Mall Bar in Haight/ and elsewhere on The Street," at the heart & peak of the 1960s Haight-Ashbury happening in San Francisco. Hunter S. Thompson had published his classic account of being embedded with the infamous-legendary group of outlaws-on-wheels the previous year, & well, all us at Third Minds know the story...the lettering & illustration here are exemplary of a time & place like no other in American history. From the collection of Erin Black Matson, the late artist-poet who with her then-husband, the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, were bona fide members of the Beat Generation as it morphed into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matson's were colleagues-protégés (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser et al. No credit or signature appears here, but we believe that Erin herself was the artist-calligrapher, the style greatly resembles hers during this decade. As to who may have printed this, who knows? Perhaps the great Literary Outlaw himself, our good friend Charles Plymell (who again as we all know was the printer of the iconic very first incarnation of Zap No. 1, see our item No.'s 2164, 2205), who really got around then & there. In any case, this is a superb relic of the magical psychedelic era, the relatively near-fine condition of which befits its long ownership & use by Erin, who was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the very end: mild rubbing, spotting & creasing, mild-to-moderate browning to recto (printed on recto only); mild wear & some bumps, creases at edges & corners esp. right side edge incl. mostly closed tear-creases with minimal loss of blank marginal paper; closed tears at blank lower margin & edge with only miniscule loss of paper; moderate browning, mild spotting & creasing to blank verso. Near Fine. [Item #4762]
