("A.G. September 23, 1977," from Back Cover Blurb). So reads the seemingly impenetrable, seemingly over-spiced Back Cover Blurb of Allen Ginsberg's "Mind Breaths: Poems 1972-1977," which--if one is not aware of the many developmental episodes and intellectual preoccupations of Allen Ginsberg's (1926-1997) life up-to-&-at that point--may seem tediously abstract. Armed with an awareness of such things, the picture becomes clear, and a many-pinned map of footnotes emerges. A few examples: his namechecking of "Crazy Wisdom" is not merely a scholarly acknowledgment of his wide reading on Buddhism and its many 'denominations,' but a direct reference to the pronounced influence of the highly-controversial Chogyam Trungpa (1939-1987; Co-Founder [with AG, Anne Waldman and others] of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute) on Allen. [See TMB Item #4704]. Likewise, "...sharp-eyed haiku" refers to the communal studying of Jack Kerouac, Philip Whalen, Gary Snyder & Ginsberg himself of the celebrated four-volume anthology-history of Haiku, "Haiku by R.H. Blyth." This four-volume set would become a deeply influential text on all four of those writers during one bright period in the mid-1950s--amounting to a transitory, though impactful few months in Ginsberg's "...cottage in Berkeley..." on Milvia Street. While we could go on in this manner, illustrating further scholastic rabbit holes and related profundities, we will leave such navigations to the future owner of this important (and accessibly priced!) Ginsberg rarity. First Edition, as corroborated by the Morgan & Cook bibliographies, despite it not being explicated as such on the copyright page. Added to this MIND BREATHS First Edition Bundle is a later printing (26th) of Ginsberg's classic HOWL & OTHER POEMS, a tipped-in reading copy which might make the perfect gift for a friend of the Ginsberg enthusiast who has yet to familiarize themselves with the liberational delights of Ginsberg's visionary City Lights debut. Both books in Near Fine condition with only moderate-to-significant shelf-wear to fine-edges; mild-to-moderate rubbing to front, back covers & spine, esp. nearest fine-edges of same; slight, diffuse light chipping to same; tiny bumps to corners.
