Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1974. Limited First Softcover Edition. Softcover. "how/ are things// trees/ wrapped cool// a sparrow/ on the dwindling snowbank// the interval/ of winter// maybe/ another chirps" ("how are things," pg. 17) A collection of poems & several prose-poem short stories by Larry Eigner (1927-1996), a major poet of the Black Mountain School of poetry who was closely associated with Robert Creeley. Trade-format softcover, one of an edition of 1500 softcover copies per colophon, an exemplary earlier Black Sparrow production. From the collection of the late Erin Black Matson, the artist-poet who, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, was a bona fide member of the Beat Generation as it morphed into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matsons were colleagues & protégés (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser et al. A worthy "reading copy" of this Eigner collectible with distinguished provenance. The relatively fair-to-good condition of this volume befits its long ownership & use by Erin, who was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end: moderate-to-significant rubbing, fading, sunning, faint scratching & creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; small, shallow area of paper loss at blank upper right edge & corner of front cover extending decreasingly onto blank areas of first four leaves (the probable result of nibblings by Erin's cats or other small creatures); mostly moderate rubbing, browning & spot-staining to edges of text block. Interior near-fine with slight paper loss noted above; tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Fair- Good. [Item #4770]
