Santa Barbara, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1977. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. "the leaves in space/ flying/ quick for shadows/ the wind" ("the leaves in space...," pg. 64) A collection of poems by Larry Eigner (1927-1996), a major poet of the Black Mountain School who was closely associated with Robert Creeley. Some of the many short poems here are haiku-like (as quoted above), & there is an abundance of eccentric spelling, spacing & syntax; as well as frequent evocations of fatalism & menace. Trade-format softcover, an exemplary Black Sparrow production from a trade edition of no stated limitation per colophon. From the collection of the late Erin Black Matson, the artist-poet who, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, was a member of the Beat Generation- morphing into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matsons were colleagues & protégés (in lifestyle as well as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser et al. We found & have retained, between pages 44-45, the front panel of a matchbook with oval portrait of an African-American woman on floral background, used by Erin as a bookmark. An important & rewarding Eigner collectible with distinguished provenance. Erin was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end, & the relatively good-to-near-fine condition of this volume befits her long ownership & use of it: Moderate-to-somewhat-pronounced rubbing, occasional spotting to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; moderate-to-significant rubbing, spotting to upper edge of text block; moderate & light at lower & side edges of same respectively. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Good- Near Fine. [Item #4786]
